Description
CHI Health and Creighton University School of Medicine are seeking an accomplished Division Chief of Critical Care Anesthesiology to lead and expand a growing academic and clinical program in Omaha and across the Nebraska and Iowa CHI Market.
This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape the future of multidisciplinary surgical critical care, while building a high-performing division aligned with Creighton’s academic mission.
The Division Chief will play a central role in advancing clinical excellence, education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration, while maintaining an active clinical presence in both the ICU and operating room.
Practice Environment
*391-bed, Level I Trauma Center and flagship academic medical center
*Department of 23 anesthesiologists and 27 CRNAs in a care team model
*Hybrid clinical model combining ICU and OR practice
*Academic medical center with a newly approved Anesthesiology Residency Program launching 2026
*EPIC EMR across the system
Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities
*Develop and expand the Division of Critical Care Anesthesiology, aligning with institutional clinical, academic, and research priorities
*Serve as the primary liaison between Anesthesiology, Surgery, and hospital leadership on ICU operations and strategy
*Lead faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional development
*Oversee resource allocation and strategic growth initiatives
*Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (CMS, Joint Commission, Leapfrog, ACGME)
*Design and implement ICU protocols and quality initiatives, including:
Standardized ICU care pathways
ICU quality, patient safety, and experience (QPSE) programs
Staffing models and operational workflows
*Expand ICU services to support high-acuity surgical and medical patients
*Represent the institution at national conferences, advisory boards, and academic collaborations
Clinical Responsibilities
*Maintain an active clinical practice with a hybrid ICU/OR model
*Direct and oversee care for high-acuity ICU patients, including:
Complex surgical and trauma patients
Respiratory failure, sepsis, and multi-organ dysfunction
Patients requiring advanced organ support (e.g., CRRT, ventilatory management)
*Serve as attending physician for critical care consults and ICU service coverage
*Foster multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient outcomes
*Implement and standardize evidence-based protocols, including sepsis, ARDS, and ERAS pathways
This position is structured to allow clinical leadership while maintaining a meaningful hybrid practice in both critical care and anesthesiology, ensuring continued engagement in perioperative and ICU medicine.
Academic & Educational Responsibilities
*Develop and lead critical care education programs within a newly established residency
*Create structured ICU rotations for residents, including training in:
Hemodynamic monitoring
Point-of-care ultrasound
Bedside echocardiography
Crisis resource management
*Oversee and participate in:
Didactic lectures, simulation training, and M&M conferences
Curriculum development and program growth
*Mentor faculty and trainees in academic and clinical development
Research & Scholarly Activity
*Build and expand research initiatives in critical care, perioperative medicine, and ICU outcomes
*Support faculty and trainees in peer-reviewed publications and national presentations
*Pursue grant funding and institutional support for research and quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications
*MD or DO degree
*Completion of an ACGME-accredited Anesthesiology Residency
*Fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine (ACCM/anesthesiology-based CCM)
*Board certification in Anesthesiology (ABA)
*Certification in Advanced Perioperative TEE required
*Proven leadership, administrative, and program-building experience
*Eligible for medical licensure in Nebraska
