Job Summary The CRNA administers anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery, monitors the patient's physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care of the patient.
Administers anesthesia and anesthesia-related care in four general categories: (1) pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation; (2) anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence, (3) post-anesthesia care, and (4) peri-anesthesia clinical support functions.
The CRNA provides anesthetic care for all types of patients in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and under the standards of the Department of Anesthesiology and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Essential functions to demonstrate skill to administer safe and smooth anesthetic care to all patients, in all areas of the hospital where Anesthesia coverage is provided.
Obtains, prepares, or utilizes all equipment, monitors, supplies and drugs used for the administration of anesthesia; performs or orders safety checks as needed.
Selects, obtains or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis, and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery.
Demonstrates expertise in Airway Management, including mass ventilation, tracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway placement, and maintenance of appropriate mechanical ventilation.
Manages regional anesthetic techniques including, but not limited to, subarachnoid, epidural and caudal blocks; plexus major and peripheral nerve blocks; performs and manages intravenous regional anesthesia.
Provides appropriate perianesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring utilizing current standards and techniques and responding to abnormal findings with corrective action.
Recognizes and treats cardiac dysrhythmias through the use of perianesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring.
Recognizes abnormal patient response during anesthesia, selecting and implementing corrective action and requesting consultation whenever necessary.
Manages the patient’s fluid, blood electrolyte and acid-base balance.
Evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia and institutes pharmacological or supportive treatment to insure the adequacy of patient recovery from anesthesia and adjuvant drugs.
Provides anesthesia care consistent with infection control and anesthetic safety principles in order to prevent the spread of disease and prevent harm to the patient, the anesthetist and other in the anesthetizing environment.
Participates in the Quality Improvement (QI) process through case documentation, incident reporting, evaluation, education, and implementation of the QI plan.
Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, and SRNAs in the clinical area.
Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and State and federal guidelines.
Maintains all required continuing education, credentialing, professional licensure, insurance payor enrollment, and annual training requirements
